There are several options that students and teachers can use to create an Avatar. Below you will find links to websites that I find to be user friendly and intuitive when creating an avatar.

Update- 1/24/2011

Clay Yourself- a fun avatar site that I just learned about over on my Diigo Education account. Check out my first attempt!!! It allows you to create a clay-like image. It is very intuitive and does have a little squirrel that "helps" you along the way! The only potential issue is that when completed the site will ask the user if he/she would like to submit it to win weekly prizes fromthe sponsor site which is hotel.com. This sectin will reuest email information, etc. There is the option to skip that section. It will easily donwload as a Jpeg - simply click download and then right click and "save image as".

Osoq Animated Avatars- a great site that allows you to create an animated avatar! It offers several options for easy customization. When completed it allows you to download the image and will also give you an embed code. There are ads on this site, but nor registration or email is required.

DoppelMe- this site is very intuitive and easy to use. It allows you the option of creating an avatar without registering for a free account. Creating a free account however allows you to save your work in order to make changes and also gives you options otherwise not available. Students can quickly and easily make themselves an Avatar.

Pocoyize- a fun, free site that allows you to create an image of yourself without the need to register. Great for younger students. Your completed avatar can be saved in a .png format to be easily uploaded and used. There are no ads on this site.

BlessThisChick- this is a very fun site for girls to create Avatars. It is free with no registration. You simply create your likeness, email it to yourself, save it as a JPEG and voila you have a one of a kind "Chick" Avatar for your blog/wiki!

Minimise Me- a fun place to go and create a mini you!! Click on "Create a Character">use the features options on the left (eyes, mouth, hair, etc.) to create your mini you. Many features have several options so make sure you click on the "next" button to see all of them! You can also use the tools on the avatar model to move and change the features. When the color palette is highlighted that means you can pick a color-- such as hair color, eye color, etc. When you are finished click on the "preview and download your character" tab (on the right side)>then click the "help with download" tab NOT the download your character tab>a new screen will open and click on the "save this character" tab. Your minimize me JPEG file will download to your computer. On most computers it will download to your desktop.

My Avatar Editor- a fun generator that allows you to create an Avatar similar to the characters on the Wii!! Use the toolbar at the bottom of the page to change the features of the avatar. To save your avatar to your computer click on the very first icon on the toolbar>click on "Export" and then save it as a JPEG. You need to remember where you save your avatar on your computer so you can find it! This link will bring you to the written "how to" guide to create an avatar using this application.

BeFunky- is a place where you can transform any photo into some very fun, very incredible artwork and the best part is, it’s all free with no registration required! It’s as simple as uploading a photo and choosing the application you want and voila, you have created an amazing BeFunky original! When finished it will give you the option of saving it to your desktop or gallery (you will need to register for an account if you want to save it to your gallery) or sharing it to a friend (email).

M&M Yourself-a fun site that allows you to become an M&M!!!

Otaku- to create your Avatar you click on the body part links on the top of the page and then make your selection from those available. You will see the changes to your Avatar in the left hand corner. When finished you simply click on the Avatar and "Save Image As". You can also use the Randomizer link to create a random Avatar.

Portrait Icon Maker- this is very similar to Otaku, but with different creating options.

MadMenYou- very fun way to create a male or female Avatar. Very intuitive- just follow the steps and when finished you download and save. It gives you 3options to pick from- head, body or full screen.

Build Your Wild Self- Use this free site to add different animal parts to create your new "wild self." No registration or logins are required. Enter a name, choose boy or girl, and create your "real self" then use the body part options from a variety of other animals to create your Wild Self! This site is maitained by the New Yourk Zoos and Aquariums.

Face Your Manga- this site will request an email address to send the completed avatar for download. Best of students use the screen capture technique to save the avatar.

South Park- an avatar generator to create your very own unique South Park character!
